Should I have a Katana?
A katana is a japanese, light-weight, sword, mainly used by ninjas. I have been practicing with wooden ones for three years. I am now thirteen and I can throw a 20 wooden stick in the air with one finger and catch it without touching the part that would be a blade so I have mastered the wooden katana, which is A lot heaver then the actual. The people at the store who let me choose one out (that my mom wouldn’t let me buy) said that I was really good at it and asked what teacher I had used. When I told them that I learned it by myself they looked at me like I was crazy. I have the money, and space for one but my mom says she doesn’t think it’s safe for my little (3 year old) brother. I have a shed to put it in or I could save money and buy a weapon vault. Do you think I should have one.
PS MY MOM IS THE ONE WHO TOLD ME TO ASK THE INTERNET.
I sorry to tell you that you have many misconceptions about katana.
The katana is not a light weight sword and is heavier than wooden ones (typically twice the weight). If you are interested in Japanese swords then find an instructor and develop some real skills. Without training you are likely to be a danger to yourself and others. At the age of thirteen, I can assure you that you have mastered nothing. You are not even aware of even basic historical facts about the Katana, evidenced by the fact that you regard ninja as the primary users of katana.
Now that you are a teenager it would be good time to start training in the use of a sword. Throwing and catching swords (especially razor sharp ones) is more like circus tricks than swordsmanship. Throwing and catching swords has no other practical function. They are not intended to be thrown. The practice is a good way to lose some fingers.
Once you have studied under a good instructor for a while – he will tell you when you are ready for a real sword.
So no – I don’t think you should have a sword.
